Included on this page are photos of scenes in northeast Oregon--the Hells Canyon area--and also in southeast Oregon--the Owyhee Canyonlands. Not included here are photographs of "canyons" elsewhere such as the Deschutes, Crooked, and John Day River canyons. For these canyons, look under "rivers."
In advertising campaigns fifty years ago, the canyonlands in Oregon's northeast corner were described as "land standing on end." This expression seems to have fallen into disuse, yet it well describes this high, radically eroded and dissected plateau where plunging declivities such as the Imnaha River Canyon, Joseph Creek Canyon, and the Grande Ronde River Canyon enter the deepest canyon of them all--Hells Canyon of the Snake River
